Each season brings with it a renewed sense of excitement and energy. Some people wait all year for the sounds of baby birds chirping in the spring, while others can’t wait for the long days of summer. Winter is great for those who want to bunker down with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book for relaxation. Still others prefer the crisp air of autumn and smell of apple crisp baking in the oven when September rolls around. Here are 5 reasons why autumn the best season for ADHD:
Weather
Here in New England, we’re known for our fall weather. But across the northern hemisphere, with fall comes more consistency. For those who use cold as a regulation strategy (me!), cool nights can help regulate our nervous system. It also helps slow down our heart rate to prepare for sleep. As you may know, adequate and restful sleep is crucial for proper sensory and emotional regulation. It can also help decrease cortisol levels, which contribute to high levels of stress! Colder temps = better symptom management for ADHD and anxiety!
Nostalgia
Think back to your childhood and I can bet you have several memories that were made special by the fact it was fall. Apple picking, hayrides, back to school shopping, you name it! Autumn brings a sense of nostalgic longing to our lives. Tap into those oxytocin-rich memories and create some new memories during these next few months.
Comfort food
Healthy, hearty meals rich in protein and healthy fats are key for managing cortisol levels, the stress hormone, and brain development. Fall is the best time to perfect those hearty cold-weather recipes. Find some new or favorite recipes to make your own meals or order out some delicious comfort foods. Your brain and body will thank you!
Being Outdoors
Being outside and in the sun helps set our brains up for proper functioning, decreasing stress, and increasing dopamine, the happy hormone. Not only is sunlight good for stress but it boosts our mood and helps us regulate our systems for better sleep at night. What a powerhouse!
Back to School Mentality
Summer is great, I LOVE summer. I love being outside, being at the beach, starting my day in the warm sun. And yet, it can be a killer on my motivation. With fall comes routine and order. In nature, fall is the natural time of the harvest and setting yourself up for success in the upcoming (winter) months. This rings true, even if you aren’t a farmer. Back-to-School means all the things are new and exciting and routines are king. Getting back into the swing of things with consistency and routine can help even the most impulsive folks get on track for more successful days.
